A Firm Foundation to Build On

You have big dreams about what kind of household you and your husband will build—how many kids you’ll have, where you’ll live, how you’ll serve the kingdom of God, etc.. But how do you get from where you are to where you want to be?

There’s a lot that goes into building a family—a household—that will last. It’s a lot of work. Much like the structural integrity of a physical building, the integrity of your household depends on the quality of the spiritual materials you use to build it. And as any good contractor knows, the most important part of your household is the foundation.

Now is the time in your life when you and your husband must focus on the hardest task—building and maintaining the foundation on which the structure of your life together will rise and become secure. These are crucial years, and you want to get it right.

So let’s roll up our sleeves and start building. The payoff will be worth the effort.

Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. (Matthew 7:24-25, ESV)

Building a Biblical Marriage

Your health and the future of your household are built on the love you have for and show your spouse.

Regardless of your current stage of marriage–from newlyweds to empty-nesters–there is always more good work to be done. And if you are growing your family, know that the greatest gift you can give your child is to develop and maintain a healthy, loving, strong marriage.

As husbands and wives work toward being closer to God as individuals they invariably grow closer to each other. A Godly woman becomes a prayerful, industrious, and loving partner in the life of her family, and a Godly husband praises his wife as he walks humbly with God.

Starting a Family

Like arrows in the bow of a warrior are children born in one’s youth. (Psalm 127:4)

On the foundation of your love for each other, you are ready to build something amazing. Like the love Christ has for His bride, the love you have for—and show to—each other brings life—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Before you really get underway, there are some tasks you may need to accomplish and decisions to make so that your family can grow smoothly. Family budget planning ahead of time can help give you a roadmap moving forward, especially as you determine where your birthing will take place.

And you may have to prepare others for the arrival of your child, like their siblings or your pets. It’s worth it to honor the process of preparing for and welcoming this new little human into the world by taking seriously the steps that lead to this bundle of joy.

Trying to Conceive

In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly. (Psalm 5:3, NIV)

God built you to be a mother, among other things, and it's your heart's desire to fulfill that purpose, but it's not happening. Perhaps you feel that something is wrong with you or your husband or that you’re the only one experiencing this stressful scenario. Chances are neither is true.

You are not broken. God made you exactly as you are for a purpose. And though it may take a lifetime to see the fullness of what that purpose is, remember that you are perfectly you. So, with the time you are given, prepare your body and soul for the possibility of pregnancy

You are not alone. Couples just like you all over the world are facing this challenge and conquering it. Through prayer, healthy behaviors, and tools at your disposal, you can successfully navigate toward fulfilling your potential as a mother.

In the meantime, rest in His peace, and do what you can to remove whatever physical or spiritual barriers there may be in the way on the path to conception.

Mothers in the Bible

What does God teach us in the Bible about being a mother?

Did you know that all of the families highlighted in scripture were dysfunctional to some degree or another?

It’s true! They all had problems. They all made mistakes. They were all human. They were flawed people who stumbled and fumbled their way toward maturity and righteousness and into God’s arms.

In His Word, God provides many imperfectly perfect examples of what it looks like to be a mother. You will discover in the stories of Eve, Sarah, Rebecca, Hannah, Hagar, Mary, Elizabeth, Naomi, and Jochebed, timeless lessons of womanhood and motherhood that have application far beyond their ancient and geographical contexts.

Naturally, He wouldn’t have included them if they weren’t useful for “teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).

We won’t get it all right all the time, but God is a gracious and loving god. If we love our children and learn from God’s Word, we will do well enough to secure for our kids a strong foundation on which they can build their lives.

Her children stand and bless her, her husband also, and he praises her: “Many daughters have done worthy things, but you—you surpass them all”.(Proverbs 31:28-29, Alter)
